Distant Storm

caught in summer clothes
in freezing winter rain
running through it all
believing in my pain

in a life
where only the strong survive
just in time
i easily could have died

i can hear the thunder of a distant storm
i can hear the thunder of a distant storm
ringing in my ears
driving through my tears
driving me through my tears

wish i could go away
for a holiday
with a brand new bag
for a [?] in a day
a friend who meets me
with a friendly face
got a [?] in my hands
[?] all over this place
we can meet with [?]
put one in my shoe
and a job for two
the things i can do
flying nowhere special
to another town
thinkin’ i might
over and over again

Quotes

In 1988 a track called Distant Storm was used in the direct-to-video (except in Hong Kong) martial arts film China O’Brien. Distant Storm is credited to Tess Makes Good, but Ellen Amos is listed as contributing “additional vocals”. The track is used only in the first few minutes of the film while China drives across the desert; it is relatively clean and free of dialogue. Although not written by Tori, the voice is unmistakable.
All These Years by Paul Campbell

“No, I didn’t write that song. Yeah, I did it to pay my rent that month. I did that for 300 dollars and I paid my rent. But it didn’t have Tori Amos on the credits…It’s credited to Tess Makes Good. Yeah, I made them sign a contract that they couldn’t use the name Tori Amos. I hadn’t made it yet, but I just knew it was gonna haunt me one day. And I wasn’t wrong. See, so I knew what I was doing. I made them sign a contract – I wrote it myself, too. I couldn’t afford a lawyer, are you kidding? I just made them sign it. I said look, the only way I’ll do this is if you can’t use Tori Amos, you have to use another name. I think Y Kant Tori Read had bombed, but I knew that I didn’t want to do anything that would come and haunt me and I needed the money.”
– Tori; Phone Interview, Nov 2, 1994
