COURTNEY LOVE

BIO >>
Courtney Love, an ex-stripper and actress, formed the alternative rock band Hole in Los Angeles in 1989. The group recorded their abrasive debut album, Pretty On The Inside, in 1991 which earned the group an international cult following, especially among riot grrrl types. What finally broke Hole, however, was not their album or their live shows, but rather Courtney Love's relationship with Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. In March 1992, Love married Cobain. Love's domestic travails continued to dominate coverage of her musical project, with Cobain's death on the eve of the release of Live Through This practically obliterating that album's impact. Lacking the raw abrasiveness of its predecessor, Celebrity Skin (produced by Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins), was ultimately a disappointingly mainstream work, although maybe this was not surprising considering Love's new "media friendly" image. According to an interview with Trent Reznor, the relationship between he and Tori was broken up by "meddling" on the part of Courtney Love. Many believe that Tori's song Professional Widow is a reference Courtney Love and her involvement with Kurt Cobain's death. Official Website: holemusic.com

QUOTES >>

I: The track Professional Widow really intrigues me. Someone said it's about Courtney Love.
T: I wrote it about my own experience. I got all that nastiness out. The truth is, if there's a part of you, of Polly [PJ Harvey], of Bjrk, or of Courtney Love, which is the black widow. Then you will relate to the song. If people don't feel that way, they won't resonate with it.
-- Tori; Singapore Interview

I: Do you realize you're seen as good copy by journalists?
T: Courtney Love gives good copy.
I: Seeing as you, um, mentioned Courtney Love, there's talk that you wrote Professional Widow about her. Is that true?
T: There's a lot of talk about her. One of my best friends is close with her. I would never dishonor that.
-- Tori; Herald Sun Newspaper (Australia), Jul 9, 1998

"Let's put it this way...Courtney and I have never spoken. We've never spoken about it and we've never spoken and I think it's best kept that way. We have mutual friends. I don't want to put them in a bad position."
-- Tori; Q Magazine, May 1998

"When I made my debut and Alanis Morissette and Courtney Love followed, female singer/songwriters were cool, but now it's just the opposite, radio stations prefer to play one female artist every hour, the token woman. Pro forma. I believe that this generation is feeling the beatings of men, because they're realizing that we [female songwriters] are getting in the way of their career. I've learned some things from Madonna, but also from revolutionary painters like Georgia O'Keefe and Frida Kahlo about the battles between men and women."
-- Tori; Belgian/Dutch Magazine Humo, Sep 18, 2001

"Yeah I like Tori Amos more and more - is it cus I'm getting older?"
-- Courtney Love; On-Line Chat, Mar 16, 2000

"Anyway...my job is to rock. How I go about it is above board, more than almost any other rock artist you can name. Tori has a damned team and band and she writes those songs and they are hookless. Good lyrics, nice style..but she bores the hell out of me."
