How do I download the mp3 files?
All of the mp3s are direct downloadable files that you
can download straight from this webpage to your computer. To save these files: right click the
wanted file, choose "save target as.." or "save file as..", choose where you want the file saved on your computer, & click OK.
Please, limit your downloads to ONE FILE AT A TIME, as a courtesy to me, the generous people
who are hosting the mp3s for you and others who are downloading. Thanks!
Why are the files not saving as an mp3? Why are they not downloading completely? Why aren't the mp3s playing in the right software program?
First, make sure that the comment next to the file download doesn't specify that the file is something other than an mp3. There are a few occasions where I will post a short movie file or an .asf file that was harvested from streaming audio or video. But the main reason for your problems are most likely on the user's end. Make sure that your browser is up-to-date, whether you're using Internet Explorer, Mozilla (Firefox), Safari, etc. Make sure that you are downloading the files directly to your computer by following the directions in FAQ#1 above. Different types of software installations or incompatibilities can sometimes set your defaults to the specifications of the software (eg. realplayer, AOL) which could in effect change file extension names or cause them to play only in that particular software. Also, those of you using dial-up and/or the AOL browser for downloading are extremely prone to getting timed-out downloads for taking too long to complete the transfer.
Why can't I download the mp3s all of a sudden? I keep getting a "File Not Found" page.
There could be a couple reasons for this. One is that the server on which certain mp3s are hosted could be down or restarting. Another reason could be that there are so many people trying to access the server to download the same mp3s that the bandwidth is spread too thin and can only allow so many connections. In both of those cases, make sure you are downloading ONE FILE AT A TIME - I also recommend trying to download again at a different time of day or waiting until the next day. Finally, another reason could be that the particular server has shut down or closed and I either do not know about it yet or haven't moved the files or fixed the links. In which case, please let me know about the problem and I will try to fix it as soon as I can get to it. Because DIAGNOSED SOUNDS offers mp3 downloads, server space and bandwidth are always going to be the limitations.
Why won't you post entire shows or more mp3s in all of the ERA sections?
As I mentioned before, server space and bandwidth are the things that limit what I am able to share. I would love more than anything to offer all of the mp3s I have, but I just don't have the money or the resources to own or operate my own server big enough for the sheer number of mp3s and with unlimited bandwidth. Bandwidth is what limits how many and how fast files can be transferred to and from a server. The more people downloading, the slower it gets. Some servers which you can rent hosting from strictly do not allow mp3s or severely limit the bandwidth. Often, if you exceed the maximum bandwidth on a server, they will charge you excessive fees or suspend the website with or without warning. As for operating my own server...even though I have a broadband, the bandwidth is still limited. There are also strict rules which prohibit the use of home ISP access as a server. The amount of traffic that this site generates per day would definitely throw up red flags, plus it would effect the speed of my personal internet access. Finally, I don't host entire shows in mp3 form due to fact that there are lossless (SHN/FLAC) files that are available for downloading in other areas of the internet (toritraders.com, alt.binaries.tori-amos) which are the only acceptable forms for distributing live bootlegs. The bootleg trading community is what really spreads the live music around. MP3s are NOT considered high-quality or cd-quality sound. They are NOT permitted in the trading community, even if you burn them onto a CD. MP3s are strictly for personal use.
I want to make an mp3 website! Can I just download the mp3s from your site and put them up on mine too?
In my opinion, the more MP3 websites out there, the better! If there are more mp3 sites, each hosting different files, we can get more songs out there. But PLEASE BE COURTEOUS. If you download and host these mp3s on your own site you MUST give credit to the sources of the file(s). This means to the recorders, encoders and original website who is hosting the files. I also wish that you would ask for permission as well, just in case there are other specified details or wishes concerning the originators of the files.
How do you get so many mp3s?
Most of the mp3s that I've made available I downloaded from toritraders.com, alt.binaries.tori-amos, ftp.tal.org, and The TOMB. The Links to those pages and more can be found via banner links on the bottom of the main page. I spent alot of time downloading, ripping, encoding, tagging and sometimes mastering and editing the files, plus uploading them and listing them on my site for people to download. There are only a couple regulars and a few random people who may contact me when they obtain new in-demand files. They are invaluable to me and I always give them credit on my site. However, they typically post their files in the places I mentioned above for anyone to download freely. My website only makes it a little easier by providing the downloads directly from a website rather than through the use of bittorrent, FTP or usenet. But with a little patience and motivation, I think that everyone should learn how to access these other methods of downloading. It can be alot easier than you think!
